EU proposals to amend visa restrictions are fuelling ethnic tensions for Roma in Serbia and Macedonia, writes Karin Waringo

20 June 2011 – The European Commission has recently submitted a new proposal to amend the existing visa regulations with third countries to enable a temporary reintroduction of visa requirements in case of a sudden, massive upsurge in the number of asylum seekers or irregular migrants. This proposal is a reaction to the recent increase in the number of asylum applications filed by Serbian and Macedonian nationals, whose countries were granted a visa waiver for short-term travel to the European Union.
