Belgrade, 3 April 2009 – Several hundred Roma blocked Jurija Gagarina Street in Belgrade to protest the removal of their makeshift community located near the Student Games village site.
“Bulldozers arrived this morning, while the ruling of the New Belgrade communal inspection arrived yesterday after one ‘o’ clock,” Enver Kovači, president of the Association of Displaced Roma from Kosovo, told B92.
He added that these Roma families had nowhere to go.
The bulldozers that arrived today were accompanied by several dozen police officers.
They were able to take down two homes, while two people were taken to hospital suffering from stress.
The situation is said to be tense, but peaceful.
