29 April 2008 – The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) has just released its country report on Serbia. In its report, ECRI notes that the situation of displaced Roma, Ashkalis and Egyptians from Kosovo remains precarious and urges the Serb authorities to take steps in order “to provide them, inter alia, with the identity papers they need in order to exercise their rights such as
the right to housing, education and employment.”
The situation in Kosovo itself is not addressed since Kosovo is no longer under the control of the Serb authorities to whom the report is addressed. ECRI nevertheless expresses its concern about reports of a “situation of interethnic tensions” and “discrimination between the different groups living in this region in access to health care, education and other services.”
The full report is available at the ECRI website.
