18 February 2008 – Switzerland will not change its asylum policy towards refugees from Kosovo. According to information published by the Swiss daily “Le Temps”, the Federal Office for Migration will not change its policy until Kosovo has been recognized as an independent country.
Even at a later stage, changes would only be gradually taking place. In the case of Kosovo Serbs applying for asylum in Switzerland it would be established whether they have an internal flight option by migrating to Kosovska Mitrovica.
In any case, Kosovo’s independence should not impact on those applications which are still in the procedure. Indeed, the Office estimates that the situation on the ground has not changed much, its spokesperson Jonas Montani is quoted in “Le Temps”.
