The Belgian organisation, Voix des Roms, has launched a petition for the regularisation of the Mazreku family.
Shpetim Mazreku comes from Kosovo, his wife from Macedonia, both are Roma. One of their three children is born in Belgium, where they applied for asylum in 2004. On 14 December 2007, their asylum application has been definitely rejected.
Already in February 2006, the family requested a regularisation of their status on the basis of article 9.3 of the Law from 15 December 1980, which allows for a regularisation of third country nationals, who have established long-time links in Belgium, but has not received an answer yet.
As rejected asylum seekers, the family has become illegal in Belgium. Their right to social assistance has been cut, nor are they entitled to work.
